ST PATRICK'S COLLEGE, CAVAN (Kilmore Diocesan Pastoral Centre)
Steeped in history & going back to its origins in 1871, St Pat's was founded as a major and minor seminary for the Diocese of Kilmore.
In 1874, The college opened on 12 March with 83 students on the roll, all boarders. The new College could accommodate about 100 boarding students and was built at a cost of £11,176
In 1886 The college ceased to be major seminary and was opened to day-students for the first time.
Despite part of the old school building in recent times being demolished, boarders no longer being accepted & a brand new school campus built in it's place, St Pat's College for Boys still remains one of the most prestigious schools in the region, with many a famous graduate!
The building pictured in the images below is now being used as the Kilmore Diocesan Pastoral Centre, whose Director, kindly allowed us access to photograph it.
It boasts a historic library, beautiful chapel with iconic stained glass windows, long portrait draped corridors and what feels like eerie ancient stairwells with angels & dragons that sit high above the entrance! The Centre now provides various facilities for the community and groups from Yoga to weight watchers.
